Chapter 03: End of a Bet

“There was a lot you were unaware of about (Name) wasn’t there?” Jinbei questioned the pirate, trying to keep his attention off of the upcoming execution. Though seeing a dark look cross, the pirates face, the fishman knew that his question wasn’t the best to ask.

“I knew enough to know I loved her” Ace snapped

“I didn’t mean it like that. I just meant that not even Whitebeard knew as much about her as you did, and even that was only a small percentage of who she was”

“It didn’t matter. I may not have known all about her, but I knew her

As the conversation drew to a grinding halt, Ace let the words spoken sink in. He truly didn’t know too much about his fiancée, it had never been something that bothered him and it still didn’t but it was becoming even more clear. It made everything he learnt about (Name) that more important and memorable, especially when he remembered the stories of how he came to learn about the doctor.

She had two sisters, one older and one younger

She often fell asleep in her lab due too overworking herself

(Name) often spent her free time researching devil fruits and different types of medicine

She was completely oblivious too people flirting with her

Quickest way to sooth her was to play with her (hair colour) hair

Would break out into tangents when members of the crew, as well as her sister it turned it, didn’t listen to her medical advice, especially if they ended up getting even more injured.

He knew that Marco was insanely protectively of her

When (Name) was bored she played with her hair or fiddled with small objects

Was insanely ticklish on her sides (that lesson got him accidentally stabbed with a scalpel)

“This is the hundredth loss Freckles” (Name) smirked at her patient as she stitched up the gash on his arm, “One would think that you’d have learnt that Pops has Busoshoku Haki”

“Maybe I enjoy your company?” Ace teased as Doc rolled her eyes at his antics “I still have one more attempt to beat Whitebeard, still a chance of me winning and getting what I want”

“Just what is it that you want?”

“That’s my secret”

“I can’t get you want you want if you don’t tell me” the female shook her head at how secretive he was being about what he wanted if he won.

“I’ll tell you when I beat the old geezer”

“You have one more shot Ace, if you don’t beat Pops on your next attempt you have to join this crew” As he watched her finish up his treatment and go to sterilise her tools, he didn’t know how to tell her what he wanted as he didn’t know how she would take it. He was also coming to realise that even if he did lose the deal there was a chance that he was able to get what he wanted. “Try and be careful Freckles”

“I make no promises Doc, how else will I get to see you” Ace teased as he left the med bay and heading back onto the deck.

……

That night Ace watched as the Whitebeard crew were partying, though he had no idea what they were celebrating and was pretty sure they didn’t either. Sitting against the railing, he remembered (Name’s) words ‘this is your hundredth loss’ which continually ran through his mind, he had lost to the old man a hundred times. Getting broken from his thoughts by a plate being placed in front of him by Marco before the first division commander started to walk away.

“Why do all of you call him your ‘old man’ anyway?” he asked, everyone in the crew called him some variation of father, whether it was (Name), commanders, chefs, everyone looked up the strongest pirate as a father figure.

“Because he calls us his sons.” Marco responded as he knelt down in front of the pirate “The world hates us for we are you know, it makes us happy. Even if it’s just a word, I hope you don’t plan on keeping this nonsense up forever. Its time you made a decision. You can’t take out old man’s head as you are now. So either you leave this ship for now or you stay and bear whitebeards mark!” finishing his speech, the pineapple haired male stood up and started to head back to the celebration, but not before pausing and throwing one more comment over his should “Plus Doc’ll be sad if you leave, she seems fond of you”

……

The next morning (Name) was surprised to see that Ace was standing in the med bay unharmed -apart from the previous day’s wounds - and dry.

“Freckles is everything alright?” the doctor asked looking at the devil fruit user who just grinned and wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her into his chest in a tight embrace “Did something happen?”

“So, both of us lost that bet” Ace smirked as he released his hold on the smaller female, not one hundred percent sure why his instinct was to embrace her, “I joined Whitebeards crew”

“Ace that’s great” this time it was (Name) who hugged the pirate which he gladly returned “What made you change your mind?”

“Marco”

“He’s good at that, he’s the one who got me to join here after all”

“Seriously?”

“Seriously. Anyway so you’re officially a member of the Whitebeard Pirates. You know that means no more attacking Pops right?”

“I know”

“Oi Ace! Just because you joined doesn’t mean you can cling to Doc” Marco and Thatch burst in glaring at their newest ‘brother’ who was still embracing their ‘sister’.

“I hugged Ace”

“Anyway, Pop’s wants to see you Ace” Marco summoned the logia user who started to follow him towards the Captains chambers, before something dawned on all three men, instead of Freckles (Name) had called Ace by his name. Neither Marco or Thatch were going to tell him the implications of that, Doc mainly called people by nicknames unless it was her sisters or Pops, it wasn’t that she was being mean, but for her it was a way to either keep people at arm’s length or demonstrated how close they were. Freckles hadn’t been a comment on his appearance or an attempt to distance herself from Ace, it had been the opposite, it was (Name’s) attempt at building a relationship with him.
